Why Does My GFCI Outlet Keep Tripping Randomly Without Load?

If your GFCI trips with nothing plugged in, it’s likely sensing a ground fault, moisture, or the device itself is failing. A downstream outlet on the same circuit can also trip it. Outdoor and bathroom GFCIs in Clearwater and St. Petersburg often nuisance-trip after humidity or rain. Do not keep resetting if it feels warm, buzzes, or smells burnt; call a licensed electrician.

Quick checks:

  • Unplug everything on the circuit.
  • Press Reset; if it trips, press Test, then Reset.
  • Dry the outlet/cover; wait 24 hours after heavy rain.
  • If it still trips, it needs diagnosis and likely replacement.
